Social Dance Influencing Movement Direction
I received funding from the wonderful Gather Up to delve deeper into what influences my movement directing practice.
My Inquiry:
Immersing myself into dance practice that is used for social connection.
Ie Forro!
My question:
How can the Brazilian social dance Forro that centres around connection influence my practice of using movement to communicate relationships on stage?
Background
I grew up with dance being a technique that could be perfected. I feel my British culture didn’t utilise and celebrate spaces for people to come together and share social dances. I would like to explore how this is present in other cultures and how that can influence my practice of collaboration, uniting people with movement and telling stories within both professional productions and community engagement.
Through taking classes with Forro Bristol, attenfing Forro social events and implementing this experience when delivering a movement direction R&D to actors, I found ...
Intention needs to be at the centre of every physical invertation and response.

Physical dialogue = someone sending an invitation and giving space for the response.
Having a set of physical coordinated interactions provides a set language for dialogue and play.
Responding or redirecting physical contact requires resistance in the body.
In Forro I have discovered the beauty in connecting with the expression of another person.
